In Salina, the green heart of the Aeolian Islands, the greek Dydime lush with centuries-old woods and heroic vineyards, Palazzo dei Mercanti offers hospitality in a charming residence with garden that belonged to a 19th-century family of landowners and sea masters. In the South facing hillside, pierced by the fierce sun that makes you squint, the fresh and ancient peace of its walls gives relief to the traveler fascinated by the Mediterranean metaphysics of these islands sculpted by wind and fire

PALAZZO DEI MERCANTI

In the quiet village of Leni, an old door peeling from time and salt leads to a silent fenced garden, pervaded by the scent of jasmine, on which the three levels of the nineteenth-century building face: the ground floor, once occupied by the wine millstone and the warehouse of the island’s merchandise, is divided into two separate units (Antico Palmento and Casa Gialla), both with kitchen, accommodating up to 2 and 4 guests respectively and overlooking a small porch where you can relax on hot summer days among lemon trees, flowers and Mediterranean essences. A staircase leads upstairs to the manor house with sea view (Dimora dei Mercanti), which can accommodate up to 5 guests and consists of two bedrooms, the ancient mezzanine, two bathrooms, dining room, living room, balcony, double terrace and large Aeolian kitchen with separate access also from outside. All rooms boast period furniture and original details that have been carefully recovered, such as the frescoed ceiling vaults and the floors decorated in nineteenth-century majolica from the kilns of Torre del Greco and Santo Stefano di Camastra. A spiral staircase finally leads to the wonderful rooftop terrace, where, protected by the ancient mass of the Church of San Giuseppe, you can admire the marine horizon and the verdant profile of the twin volcanos of the island while tasting a glass of Malvasia and waiting for the sunset and the rise of the early stars. Salina is a special destination for wine enthusiasts, thanks to the volcanic soil, the saltiness, the wind and the light of the island that make its wine really unique. Summer is the right season for sea lovers, spring and autumn are ideal for hiking and trekking and for those who are just longing for silence and tranquility. The three units can be rented individually, sharing the solarium terrace and the garden, or you can reserve Palazzo dei Mercanti for up to 11 guests for exclusive use, as an ideal location for groups of friends or families, celebrative events, business meetings, workshops or for those who simply aspire to enjoy top privacy during their stay.

LOCATION

Palazzo dei Mercanti is located in the village of Leni, on the southern side of the island of Salina belonging to the Aeolian archipelago: it’s about 3 km from the port of Rinella and its wide dark sandy beach, which can also be reached on foot by going down a stepped path among prickly pear cactus and scent of Mediterranean plants. Leni normally is quiet all year round and just comes slightly alive with summer tourism and on the feast of San Giuseppe, in March, when on the small square of the church dedicated to the Saint local people (who are nice to join) gather around the traditional tavuliata filled with local food and wine products. Within walking distance of the property you will find a cafè, a grocery, a bakery and other shops.
The main villages of the island are connected by bus lines, alternatively you will enjoy the best freedom renting a scooter or a car. And if you love hiking, the island is crossed by pathways where you can immerse yourself in the volcanic energy of nature, amidst woods and cliffs overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.
